Denying the Mediterranean region from the Allies was regarded as the major goal of the Axis command to capture and hold the strategic resources of the African continent. Germany however failed to conduct an effective war of attrition here. Even the brilliant command of the legendary “Desert Fox” - General Erwin Rommel - couldn’t save the German Afrika Korps from heavy losses forcing them to retreat back to Europe. The Allied forces of the USA, Great Britain and France deprived Hitler’s hopes to conquer Africa.
