Operation: "Battleaxe"

From 15th to 17th June 1941, the British Armed Forces' operation to break the siege of Tobruk in Libya took place under the codename "Battleaxe". 

That was one of the first times during the war that the Axis forces had to fight on the defensive, and at first glance the forces were almost equal. British command predictions were very optimistic. 

But they underestimated their enemy and paid a serious price for it - in just over three days of fighting, the British army lost almost 1,000 troops, half the armored vehicles and a third of the planes involved in the operation, while the Italo-German forces, with slightly higher losses in manpower, retained almost all their vehicles.

This operation showed the British command that even when the enemy is faced with disrupted supplies and constant fuel shortages, tactical decisions also play an important role.
